My screencast was about Stack Overflow, a community driven Q&A platform for a wide variety of topics. It’s a website I find myself using quite often but not one I explored to its fullest extent until now. I primarily use it for getting quick answers errors I encounter at work. I have not fully explored the different options provided to the user while answering questions. I also discovered the salary calculator which I had no idea existed. I found the salary calculator a super useful tool that I plan on using sometime in the future. Additionally, Stack Exchange is a part of Stack Overflow and provides the same functionality but different topics. The two websites follow the same design and are intended for the same use.
I had a lot of issues with getting ScreenCast-O-Matic to even download. I noticed a lot of students were having issues as well. Instead, I used QuickTime player which achieved the same end result. I have never actually screencasted before, but it wasn’t something I found difficult. The way I go about screen casting is by assuming the audience has zero prior knowledge of what they are looking at. This technique helps you expand on different topics that you are sharing. I think that screen casting is a valuable skill to have because it’s essentially presenting an interactive PowerPoint. I could see this being useful when there is a need to have to a website or program demonstrated to a group of people. Overall, screen casting is quite similar to live streaming the only difference being the presence of a live audience. The screen casting experience ended up being a lot of fun and useful for learning to interact with audiences. I hope I have more opportunities to use screen casting In my future career field!
I think screencasts are best used in an instructional setting, so I think assuming zero-knowledge is a great place to start because the people searching for these videos are most likely very unfamiliar with whatever it is they are trying to figure out.
