I think this meme accurately portrays that majority of our feelings and views towards our society’s current state of artificial intelligence. Every other day it seems there is a new article warning of us of the oncoming danger of artificial intelligence, when in reality the technology is no where near that stage. What’s more, most of the applications of artificial intelligence are relatively simple and are used in the commercial sector.
To be fair, it’s not uncommon for movies from decades ago to over predict the future. In fact, we see it in movies all the time (think Star Wars or Back To The Future). This raises the question, are we just really bad at predicting the future or just way less capable than we think we are? And if we are way less capable then we think we are, where are we heading? A meme of our AI technology may seem insignificant, but is a perfect snapshot of a pattern that seems to be reoccurring. This isn’t a unique situation either, since that’s what memes do; capture a snapshot of our society at the time of their creation.

Hi Mathew, I think we truly are just that bad at predicting the future or maybe we think we are way smarter than we are. I will give credit to the Simpsons since they seem to be real life time travelers predicting the future correctly always. You’re right about seeing new articles everyday about the dangers of AI but at this point I feel like people will do what they will regardless of the potential consequences that can ensue.

Hi Matt, you make a really great point that everyone is worried about artificial intelligence, yet we are far from that happening. I actually really laughed at this meme, because it’s obviously a cat in the picture and not a dog. But that just shows like you said, that we are still FAR away from the AI to be happening. Great meme choice!
