Traditionally, the non-profit ICANN has been responsible for overseeing the internet’s domain name system. They control who gets .edu website, .gov websites and so on. They claim to not be price a regulator, so they have also looked to the U.S government for guidance of what to value domain names at. Recently, the U.S government has backed off this role of regulating domain names, so each of it’s registries are being sold to the highest bidder. The .org domain is being sold to a private equity firm called Ethos capital for a cool $1.13bn. This means .org domains will likely be sold to people who don’t really run organization in the name of profit. One consequence of this we will undoubtedly see is a lot of people being phished through .org domains that were once trusted on the internet.
